Joseph Leeland Roop (some records show his name as Joseph Lee) was born December 22, 1869 in Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky. His father was Joseph William Roop (1842-1893), born in Roopsburg, Centre County, Pennsylvania; he grew up in Tippecanoe Co., Indiana and Decatur, Alabama.
